The Hive - Summer 2021

  1. 8th/ 9th June Youth Steering Group

Young people age 13-17 are welcome to join our new Youth Steering committee which start on 8th/ 9th June. Young people will come together to form a group which will have a say in what happens for young people in the Hive. There will be new learning, lots of fun, it will run weekly until the end of July and there will be a day trip included. There is an element of responsibility with this group and young people will build their leadership skills and confidence.   1. Level Up by Foroige and the Hive

There will be 2 week long programmes where young people will learn and improve tech skills around animation, digital storytelling, podcasting. The first week is for age 14-17 starting 21st June. The second week is for age 10-13 starting 5th July. To register contact Darren on 086 7953215

  1. The Hive Youth Radio

We will continue to build on the success of our online radio The Hive Youth Radio and young people who are interested in learning how to make their own shows and podcasts which we we broadcast and then put on Spotify.   1. Streetart

On July 20th-22nd July we will be running a group for age 10-12 where we will work with an artist to create streetart on Academy St, Kildare Town. To book a place contact Lynne phone 085 2526839 / email lynne@thehivekildare.ie

  1. Rubbish Redesign

From 4th - 6th August, for age 13-16 we will look at how to Reduce / Reuse / Recycle waste and turn in into something creative such as a fashion items or whatever is decided by the group. For more information contact Lynne on 085 2526839 / lynne@thehivekildare.ie

Secondary school students looking to get a taste of college life can join NCI's online summer camp Ctrl-Alt-Compete in web design or data science.

Free Online Summer Camps for TY Students We invite your TY students to register for our computing summer camps to experience virtual college life at National College of Ireland.

CTRL-ALT-COMPETE in Web Design (Girls Only)

When: 19th - 23rd July 2021

Where: Online

Requirements: A laptop or desktop computer

Female TY students will design and develop websites, guided by expert mentors who specialise in web development.

CTRL-ALT-COMPETE in Data Science

When: 26th - 30th July 2021

Where: Online

Requirements: A laptop or desktop computer

Students will design and develop data-based applications around a central theme, guided by mentors who are experienced in the data science field.

UL Cybercamp Online

UL Cybercamp Online (ULCCO): Each online camp has 3 learning streams: Web Design, Java Programming and Visual Design Programming.

All streams are suitable for beginners (no previous experience required), in each stream students will have access to a series of short videos and other learning material, supported by a live online session. Fully supported forums allow students to get assistance for each stream during the camp.

The camp is FREE to students thanks to funding from the Higher Education Authority.

As part of our commitment to PATH, we will participate in the Creative Arts Summer School with NCAD, TCD, UCD, IADT, MIE & MTU Crawford, Cork, coming up in June and many other collaborative PATH initiatives into the future, which we look forward to.

  1. FREE COOKERY COURSE being run by Culinary Arts TU Dublin Tallaght.

It is a week-long, creative, cook-along programme for health & well-being for 15-17 year olds. There will be 2 sessions per day (Morning session 10-12 and Afternoon session 2-4pm) and enrolled students will be expected to attend both sessions. The amount of weeks we run it for will depend on how many students we get. At the moment we are thinking of 5 weeks over the following dates below.

There is no cost for the course but students will need to buy their own ingredients. It should only cost about €5 per day and all recipes will be in line with whatever ingredients are on special in Lidl that week. Students will need parental supervision while doing the course. ReelLife Science is a national short film competition which is a great summer programme project or add-on activity to STEAM programme

ReelLife Science is a national short film competition which is a great summer programme project or add-on activity to STEAM programmes.

Support young people of all ages to create a 1- 3 minute film or animation, in English or Irish on an element of Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths.

The competition is open to young people in Ireland and Northern Ireland representing their Youth Organisation, Primary School or Secondary School.

Prize of €1000 for the winning youth group film.

Winning films are screened for the public at the Galway Science and Technology Festival.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Films are marked on the level of Science explained, Production of the film and X Factor.

Closing date for ReelLife Science is 15th October
