Meitheal 2020

26-November-20

Our Meitheal journey this year started a little bit different than most. Due to Covid 19 restrictions we were unable to partake in the regular training week but we had a great time on our Covid safe training day at the Education centre. We got the opportunity to bond as a team and strengthen our relationships with each other. We developed new innovative ways to help us stay involved in the 1st Years transition from primary to secondary school during these challenging times.

We began the year with First Year Induction Days. On these days we got the chance to meet all of the First Years and introduce ourselves to them over three days. We played icebreakers, gave the first years a tour of the school premises and gave them advice and tips for starting their secondary school life. This was a great way for the 1st years to get to know us and us to get to know them.

Following the induction day, we thought it would be a good idea for the 1st Years to have an understanding of the school building and the new health and safety regulations imposed in the school. We decided to make a video explaining the new layout and the guidelines that they would need to follow when entering the school. This video was displayed during the 1st year open evening at the start of the school year.

For Halloween we hosted a Halloween themed quiz for the 1st Years. We encouraged them to engage in some Halloween fun by playing festive music and having groups answer Halloween themed questions for the chance to win some spooky prizes. The quiz gave us more time to talk with the first years and build strong bonds with them.

As exams are fast approaching we thought the first years would benefit from some tips on how to study for their exams. We put together a presentation using our own experiences of what we found helpful when studying and talked them through it. It was a nice way to see how the first years were coping in their new environment and to answer any questions they may have for us about school so far.

We have many events planned for the First Years in the future, a Christmas jumper day being just one of many. We are looking forward to getting to know the First Years better and finding more ways we can help make their transition into secondary school life a little bit easier.
