Presentation Sisters

On Thursday, the 11th of April, 2019, our school held a special thank you ceremony for the Presentation Sisters.

Teachers and pupils assembled in the canteen for a presentation to honour and appreciate the legacy left by the Sisters, following the official closure of the Presentation Convent in January of this year. The Sisters were an influential presence in Kildare Town for 184 years, many of whom taught in the Presentation Secondary school before the amalgamation with St Joseph’s Academy and Kildare Vocational School, that is now Kildare Town Community School. They also made a huge contribution to the local community, carrying the light of hope to those in need. Mr Hayes recalled the founder of the Presentation Sisters, Nano Nagle, who set up the sisters in Cork in 1775. She believed that education was a light for the marginalized and poor in society, providing a gateway out of poverty.

The twenty Sisters were brought into the school and were greeted by the senior prefects. They socialised over tea and coffee in the parents room while members of the school community and Fr Adrian Carbery gathered in the hall to celebrate their work and achievements throughout their years, here in Kildare Town.

As the Sisters came into the hall, they were welcomed by a standing ovation. A guard of honour guided them up the corridor where students from St Bridget’s Primary School and KTCS presented them with sunflowers. The sunflowers were symbols of how the Sisters watched the students grow and bloom to their full potential. Mario Corrigan gave a detailed account of the sisters early years in Kildare Town. He explained that they began teaching their earliest pupils in the stables on the grounds and grew the school from there.

Performances from the school band, choir, and irish dancers kept us highly entertained. St Bridget’s Primary School showcased their musical talents to the delight of the audience. We were also treated to a lovely verse of song from Sister Cecelia, who still represents the Presentation Order on our Board of Management. Sister Cecelia gave an insightful background to the work of the sisters and how they formed our school motto “Illuminate, Love, and Serve”. The Sisters were then presented with St Bridget’s Crosses as a token of our school’s appreciation and to remind them that they will always have a special place in our hearts, here in Kildare Town Community School.

The ceremony closed with a decadent afternoon tea for the Sisters and staff of the Presentation Secondary School.
